About This Soundtrack
John Crowley's 2024 romantic drama We Live in Time stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh as a couple experiencing a decade of love, family, and unexpected tragedy. When Almut, a rising chef, receives a life-altering cancer diagnosis, she and Tobias must learn to cherish their remaining days. The film uses a nonlinear structure to capture the raw emotions of their relationship. The soundtrack acts as an emotional companion, reflecting their early courtship, domestic challenges on a quiet farm, and the bittersweet nature of their journey.
The soundtrack utilizes a mix of indie rock, electronic music, and alternative pop to enhance the emotional atmosphere. Music supervisor Nick Angel selected tracks from artists such as Wolf Alice, The xx, Jess Glynne, and Avicii to define different moments in the couple's lives. Alongside these licensed songs, composer Bryce Dessner of The National wrote a delicate and minimalist orchestral score. Dessner's piano and string arrangements highlight the beauty and fragility of the characters' shared moments without overshadowing the performances.

About the Composer(s)
Bryce Dessner (born April 20, 1976) is an acclaimed American composer and guitarist, widely recognized as a founding member of the Grammy-winning rock band The National. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he studied guitar and composition at Yale University, earning a Master of Music degree. Dessner is celebrated for his versatility, moving easily between indie rock, contemporary classical music, and film scoring.
In addition to his work with The National, Dessner has collaborated with prestigious orchestras worldwide, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. He entered the film scoring field with his contribution to Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Oscar-winning drama The Revenant (co-composed with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto). He has since written original scores for several major films, including Fernando Meirelles' The Two Popes, Mike Mills' C'mon C'mon, and Iñárritu's Bardo. In 2024, Dessner composed the original score for John Crowley's romantic drama We Live in Time, creating a delicate, piano-driven instrumental backdrop that emphasizes the film's emotional timeline.
Did you know?
- Real Head Shaving: For the emotional scene where Almut undergoes chemotherapy, Florence Pugh insisted on shaving her head for real instead of using a bald cap. The scene, where Andrew Garfield's character Tobias shaves her head, was filmed in one take to capture the raw, authentic emotion of the moment.
- Viral Carousel Horse: A promotional photo showing the two leads on a carousel went viral due to a goofy, buck-toothed carousel horse in the foreground. The image spawned numerous internet memes, which the actors later joked about in press interviews.
- End Credits Collaboration: The movie's end credits feature the song 'I'm on your team', a special collaborative single written and performed by Romy (of The xx) and Sampha. The track was co-produced by Thomas Bartlett alongside both artists.
- Bryce Dessner's Score: The original instrumental music was composed by Bryce Dessner, a member of the Grammy-winning indie rock band The National. He created a delicate, piano-driven score that complements the film's nonlinear timeline without overpowering the dramatic scenes.
