About This Soundtrack
Directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg, the 1985 adventure-comedy classic The Goonies is a defining film of the 1980s. Following a group of kids from the Goon Docks of Astoria, Oregon, who discover a 17-century treasure map in an attic, the movie is a spectacular, fast-paced quest to find the legendary treasure of pirate One-Eyed Willy. Their journey is complicated by the dangerous Fratelli family, a group of escaping convicts who want the gold for themselves.
The audio landscape of The Goonies is legendary. It features an energetic, sweeping orchestral score by Dave Grusin that captures the whimsical danger and swashbuckling spirit of a pirate adventure. Along with Grusin's score, the movie's soundtrack album is spearheaded by Cyndi Lauperβs iconic, chart-topping pop anthem "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough", which serves as the musical heart of the film. The album also features 80s hits from REO Speedwagon, The Bangles, and Luther Vandross.

Did you know?
- Cyndi Lauper's Direct involvement: Cyndi Lauper was chosen by Steven Spielberg to be the musical director for the film's soundtrack. She co-wrote and performed the film's main theme 'The Goonies 'R' Good Enough', and also made a memorable two-part music video featuring the cast of the film alongside famous professional wrestlers of the era.
- Richard Donner's Cameo: Director Richard Donner makes a brief cameo appearance near the end of the film as one of the deputies riding a quad bike on the beach. Donner was known for his collaborative style, allowing Dave Grusin great creative freedom to weave classic pirate-themed leitmotifs into the score.
- The Giant Pirate Ship Theme: For the reveal of One-Eyed Willy's legendary ship, the Inferno, composer Dave Grusin composed a grandiose, classical pirate theme. The track utilized deep strings and soaring brass to evoke the epic scale of 17th-century maritime adventure, which stood in stark contrast to the film's modern 1980s pop songs.
