About This Soundtrack
DreamWorks Animation's 2004 blockbuster Shrek 2, directed by Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury, and Conrad Vernon, stands as one of the most successful and beloved animated sequels of all time. Reunited with their favorite ogre, audiences follow Shrek and Princess Fiona on a trip to the Kingdom of Far Far Away to meet the in-laws, King Harold and Queen Lillian. The adventure takes a twisted turn with the introduction of Puss in Boots, a potion-brewing Fairy Godmother, and the pompous Prince Charming. Complementing the film's brilliant comedic pacing and emotional depth is an exceptionally curated soundtrack that defined the musical landscape of the early 2000s.
The movie's soundtrack is famous for its outstanding licensed tracklist and cover songs that have become pop culture milestones. Leading the list is Counting Crows' Academy Award-nominated original hit Accidentally In Love, which perfectly scores Shrek and Fiona's romantic honeymoon montage. The film also features iconic cover performances, such as Fairy Godmother's showstopping rendition of Holding Out For a Hero (later closed out by Frou Frou's electronic pop version) and the celebratory duet of Livin' la Vida Loca by Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots). Other legendary pop, rock, and alternative contributions include Lipps Inc.'s Funkytown, Pete Yorn's Ever Fallen In Love, Butterfly Boucher and David Bowie's duet version of Changes, and Tom Waits' dark ballad Little Drop of Poison.
Alongside these immortal pop hits, acclaimed composer Harry Gregson-Williams delivers a grand, whimsical, and emotionally rich orchestral score. His themes masterfully highlight the film's fairy-tale action, magical transformations, and emotional vulnerabilities. About the Movie
In Shrek 2, newlyweds Shrek and Princess Fiona travel to the kingdom of Far Far Away to meet Fionaβs parents, King Harold and Queen Lillian, who are shocked to discover that their daughter and new son-in-law are both ogres. King Harold, deeply disapproving of the marriage, secretly conspires with the scheming Fairy Godmother and her vain son, Prince Charming, who was originally meant to rescue and marry Fiona. To eliminate Shrek, the King hires the legendary feline assassin Puss in Boots. However, the assassination attempt fails, and the charismatic cat instead befriends Shrek and Donkey, joining them on their journey. Desperate to win the King's approval, Shrek steals a magical "Happily Ever After" potion from the Fairy Godmother's factory, which temporarily transforms him into a handsome human prince and Donkey into a noble white stallion.
The Fairy Godmother quickly exploits this transformation by locking Shrek away and forcing Prince Charming to pose as the newly human Shrek to win Fiona's heart. With the help of Donkey, Puss, and a loyal group of fairytale creatures, Shrek escapes captivity and stages a dramatic rescue at the royal palace during a celebratory ball. After a chaotic battle that exposes the villains' plot and forces King Harold to sacrifice himself to save Shrek, the spell on the potion begins to fade. Given the choice to remain human forever, Fiona chooses to let the magic expire, rejecting superficial beauty so that she and Shrek can live happily ever after in their true, authentic ogre forms.
