About This Soundtrack

The 2026 live-action fantasy film Masters of the Universe, directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings, Bumblebee) and produced by Amazon MGM Studios, brings the iconic He-Man franchise to the big screen for the first time in nearly four decades. Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam / He-Man alongside Jared Leto as the villainous Skeletor, Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, and Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress. The film's music was composed by Daniel Pemberton, one of the most in-demand composers of his generation, known for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Ferrari. His score is accompanied by a focused selection of licensed tracks spanning 80s new wave, early 90s rock, and dance, giving the film's Earth-set sequences a sharp, decade-specific sonic identity.

The licensed soundtrack serves two distinct purposes within the film. When Prince Adam is stranded on Earth in 1987, the music draws on songs that defined that era , The Cure's Boys Don't Cry (New Voice Club Mix 1986), The Killers' The Man, Snap!'s The Power (Punch Mix), and 4 Non Blondes' What's Up?, grounding his displacement in a recognizable period sound. When the action reaches its peak on Eternia, Queen's Princes of the Universe plays during Adam and his team's prison escape at the 1:45 mark — a choice that functions as a direct nod to Highlander (1986), for which Queen originally recorded the song, carrying extra resonance for fans of both properties.

Two original songs were commissioned for the film. Eternia, co-written by Daniel Pemberton and featuring Queen guitarist Brian May, blends orchestral drama with May's signature guitar tone and serves as one of the score's emotional anchors. The Darkness, the British band known for their theatrical arena rock, recorded Masters of the Universe, the film's dedicated title track, which plays over the closing credits. Together, these commissioned tracks, the licensed songs, and Pemberton's full orchestral score form a layered musical package that spans classic rock, 80s alternative, and sweeping fantasy scoring. This page lists every song heard in Masters of the Universe, with verified track details, scene timestamps, and direct streaming links for Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube.

About the Composer(s)

Daniel Pemberton is an English composer born in 1977, widely regarded as one of the most versatile and genre-defying voices in contemporary film scoring. He recorded his debut album at 16 and spent over two decades composing for British television before his film breakthrough with Ridley Scott's The Counselor (2013). Since then, Pemberton has built one of the most varied bodies of work in Hollywood: he received Academy Award and BAFTA nominations for Steve Jobs (2015), composed the Grammy-winning score for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), one of the most acclaimed animated film scores of the decade, and returned to the Spider-Verse with Across the Spider-Verse (2023). His other major credits include The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), Birds of Prey (2020), The Man from U. N. C. L. E. (2015), King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017), Enola Holmes (2020), Ferrari (2023), and Project Hail Mary (2026). For Masters of the Universe, Pemberton composed a large-scale fantasy score and co-wrote the original theme Eternia with Queen guitarist Brian May, who also performs on the track.

Did you know?

  • Brian May's Contribution: Queen guitarist Brian May co-wrote and performed on Eternia, the film's orchestral theme, his first original contribution to a major Hollywood film score since Queen's work on Flash Gordon (1980) and Highlander (1986). The casting of May adds a direct lineage between the new film and the fantasy and sci-fi films that defined the era the movie draws from.
  • Highlander Callback: Queen's Princes of the Universe plays during the prison escape sequence at the 1:45:29 mark. The song was originally recorded for the 1986 film Highlander, whose tagline, 'There can be only one', mirrors the He-Man mythology. The choice is a deliberate intertextual reference, rewarding viewers familiar with both properties.
  • The Darkness Title Track: British rock band The Darkness, known for their glam-metal theatrics and arena anthems, recorded the film's official title track Masters of the Universe. The band's big, bombastic sound is a strong match for the film's tone, and the track plays over the end credits.
  • 80s Time Capsule: The four licensed songs heard during the Earth sequences, The Cure, The Killers, Snap!, and 4 Non Blondes, span 1986 to 1993 but were selected to create a consistent period atmosphere of mid-to-late 80s Earth. The Killers track, though from 2017, was chosen for its lyrical fit with Adam's character rather than strict period accuracy.

Why does What's Up? by 4 Non Blondes play when the ogre appears?

The choice of 4 Non Blondes' What's Up? (1992) for the ogre scene is a comedic contrast — the song's raw, searching energy played against the absurdity of a giant creature appearing in a modern-day overpass is a deliberate tonal gag. It also fits the film's broader 80s/early-90s Earth soundtrack.
