About This Soundtrack

The 2014 high-octane action film Need for Speed, directed by Scott Waugh, successfully translates the raw velocity and thrill of Electronic Arts' iconic racing video game franchise onto the big screen. Starring Aaron Paul as Tobey Marshall, a blue-collar mechanic and street racer seeking vengeance after being framed for his friend's death, the movie relies on stunning real-life stunt work rather than heavy CGI. Enhancing this relentless, rubber-burning journey across the United States is a fantastic soundtrack curated by music supervisors Gabe Hilfer and Season Kent, combined with a powerful score by Nathan Furst.

The film's licensed tracklist is packed with energy, featuring the standout ending credits theme Hero by Kid Cudi and Skylar Grey, along with propulsive tracks like Jamie N Commons' gritty remix of All Along The Watchtower (produced by Alex Da Kid) and Aloe Blacc's covers of Fortunate Son and Back In The Saddle. Classic rock elements like Steve Miller Band's Fly Like an Eagle provide a perfect sonic contrast to modern electronic selections from Poolside (Slow Down) and Calvin Love (Magic Hearts) during the film's road trip sequences.

About the Composer(s)

Nathan Furst (born July 4, 1978) is an American composer and sound designer known for his energetic, cinematic scores in both feature films and television. A versatile musician, Furst began his composing career in the late 1990s and quickly built a reputation for blending electronic synths, propulsive orchestral movements, and rock elements to amplify high-stakes action. His notable scoring credits include the action-drama Act of Valor, the computer-animated BIONICLE movie trilogy (which garnered a devoted fanbase for its atmospheric orchestral themes), and DreamWorks' high-octane gaming adaptation Need for Speed (2014). His work on Need for Speed perfectly captures the thrill, speed, and emotional gravity of illegal cross-country supercar racing, making him one of the standout action film composers of his generation.

  • Kid Cudi's Double Duty: Kid Cudi not only stars in the movie as Tobey's pilot friend Benny, but also co-wrote and performed the film's powerful theme song 'Hero' alongside singer Skylar Grey specifically for the soundtrack.
  • Epic Watchtower Remix: The De Leon race introduction features an aggressive, modern trap-rock remix of Bob Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower' by British artist Jamie N Commons and producer Alex Da Kid, giving a fresh sonic identity to a classic theme.
  • Real Stunts, Real Music: Director Scott Waugh, a former stuntman, insisted on practical car stunts with no green screens. The music was composed to mimic the roar of the engines, ensuring a harmonious balance between acoustic sound effects and Nathan Furst's score.
  • Aloe Blacc's Contributions: Singer Aloe Blacc recorded two high-energy rock-soul covers specifically for the Need for Speed EP: Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Fortunate Son' and a brand new track 'Back In The Saddle'.

About the Movie

Need for Speed tells the story of Tobey Marshall, a blue-collar mechanic and skilled street racer who is framed by his wealthy and treacherous rival, Dino Brewster, for a tragic accident that killed his close friend Pete. After serving two years in prison, Tobey is released with a single-minded focus on revenge. His only chance to bring Dino down and clear his own name is to enter the De Leon, a legendary, winner-take-all underground supercar race organized by the mysterious Monarch. To get across the country from New York to California in time for the race, Tobey must partner with Julia Maddon, a savvy British car broker who provides a custom Ford Mustang. Pursued by both the police and bounty hunters hired by Dino, Tobey and his loyal crew embark on a high-speed, cross-country gauntlet, pushing their cars and themselves to the absolute limit in a desperate quest for justice and redemption.
