Nine Inch Nails
“I think the most important thing is to make music that you believe in, regardless of what is popular or what is expected.”
Nine Inch Nails (commonly abbreviated as NIN) is an American industrial rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1988 by singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Trent Reznor. As the band's primary creative force, Reznor served as the sole official member of the group for nearly thirty years, writing, arranging, and performing almost all the instrumentation in the studio. In 2016, English composer and producer Atticus Ross, a frequent collaborator since the early 2000s, officially joined the band as its second permanent member. Nine Inch Nails rose to fame in the 1990s with their ground-breaking releases 'Pretty Hate Machine' (1989), the EP 'Broken' (1992), and the multi-platinum masterpiece 'The Downward Spiral' (1994), which produced classic alternative anthems like 'Closer' and 'Hurt'.
NIN's music is celebrated for its blending of industrial beats, electronic synthesizers, aggressive guitars, and deeply personal, introspective lyrics exploring themes of alienation, angst, and existential dread. Beyond their studio achievements, Nine Inch Nails is renowned for their intense, visually spectacular live performances featuring state-of-the-art light shows and interactive visuals. In the late 2000s, Reznor and Ross began a highly successful parallel career composing instrumental film and television scores, winning two Academy Awards for Best Original Score for 'The Social Network' (2010) and 'Soul' (2020), as well as Emmy and Grammy awards. Nine Inch Nails was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, solidifying their legacy as one of the most influential and innovative rock acts of their generation.

Trivia
One-Man Studio Project: For most of its history, Trent Reznor was the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and recorded almost all instruments himself in the studio, hiring a backing band only for live performances.
Woodstock '94 Breakdown: The band's performance at Woodstock '94 is legendary. They performed completely covered in mud, which they did intentionally backstage to combat stage fright and create an iconic aesthetic.
Johnny Cash's Hurt Cover: Johnny Cash covered their song 'Hurt' in 2002. Trent Reznor originally felt protective of the song but upon hearing Cash's rendition and seeing the music video, he said, 'that song isn't mine anymore.'
Lil Nas X Sample: The backing track for Lil Nas X's record-breaking hit 'Old Town Road' was built around a banjo sample from Nine Inch Nails' instrumental track '34 Ghosts IV' from their 2008 album Ghosts I-IV.
