New Order

New Order

“We are the only band in the world where every member plays a different instrument on stage than they actually recorded in the studio.”

New Order is an influential English rock band formed in 1980 in Salford, Greater Manchester. They emerged from the dissolution of the post-punk band Joy Division following the tragic suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. The surviving members—guitarist and keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris—chose to continue their musical journey, adopting the name New Order and later recruiting keyboardist Gillian Gilbert. By combining the raw, moody textures of post-punk with the upbeat rhythms of electronic dance music, New Order became pioneers of alternative dance and synth-pop, establishing themselves as one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s.

The band's 1983 single 'Blue Monday' became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time, transforming them into a flagship act for Factory Records and the legendary Manchester nightclub, The Haçienda. Their signature sound—characterized by Peter Hook's melodic, high-register basslines, Bernard Sumner's evocative vocals, and Stephen Morris's precise, machine-like drumming—produced a phenomenal string of hits, including 'Bizarre Love Triangle,' 'Temptation,' 'True Faith,' and 'Regret.' Their long-term collaboration with graphic designer Peter Saville resulted in iconic, minimalist album covers that defined their visual aesthetic.

New Order's pioneering music has been extensively featured in movies, TV shows, and video games. Their songs have lent a unique synth-pop and post-punk edge to key cinematic scenes, such as the tense bathroom sequence in the 2026 thriller Over Your Dead Body, which featured 'Leave Me Alone' from their seminal 1983 album Power, Corruption & Lies.

Trivia

Joy Division Roots: The band's debut single, 'Ceremony', was one of the final songs written by Joy Division before Ian Curtis's death.

Factory Records Icon: New Order was closely associated with Factory Records and was a part-owner of the legendary Manchester club The Haçienda, which became a birthplace for the Madchester scene.

Blue Monday Cover Cost: The unique floppy-disk-style sleeve for 'Blue Monday' was designed by Peter Saville. Due to its die-cut design and silver foil, the sleeve was so expensive to produce that Factory Records reportedly lost money on every copy sold.

Peter Hook's Departure: Bassist Peter Hook left the band in 2007. His melodic, high-register basslines played a defining role in New Order's signature sound.
