Marshall Bruce Mathers III, professionally known as Eminem (and by his alter ego Slim Shady), is a towering figure in contemporary music, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, and raised in the gritty streets of Detroit, Michigan, his turbulent upbringing, battles with poverty, and complex relationship with his mother heavily fueled his intense and raw lyrical style. After gaining attention in the underground rap battle scene, Eminem caught the ear of legendary producer Dr. Dre, who signed him to Aftermath Entertainment. His breakout record The Slim Shady LP (1999) earned him global stardom and introduced his dark, satirical, and highly technical flow to the mainstream.
