Doechii grew up in Tampa, Florida, and attended a performing arts high school where she trained in ballet, tap dance, and theater, which heavily influences her theatrical music videos and live performances.

She initially released music under the name IamDoechii before shortening it to Doechii, which is inspired by the name of a character in the anime series 'Sailor Moon.'

Her hit single 'What It Is (Block Boy)' samples TLC's classic 1999 hit 'No Scrubs' and features an interpolation of 'Some Cut' by Trillville.

In 2022, she became the first female rapper signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), joining a roster that historically included Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
